Synopsis Betrayal ()
Bart is heading via stagecoach to Claver. There are three passengers with him, and it's a two-day trip. A woman, Laura Dillon, is explaining to her fellow passenger and cousin Ann Saunders that the man she's dating hasn't proposed to her yet. Ann notes that Laura should get a proposal from the man, and Bart, overhearing, speaks up and sides with Laura. Laura thanks Bart, and the remaining passenger introduces himself as R.J. Guthrie. Ann asks Bart what his profession is, taking an interest him.Two masked robbers stop the stagecoach. One robber orders the passengers out, and Bart does so after pinning the money in his wallet to the roof of the coach. Outside, one of the other robbers frisk the passengers, and the man apologizes. Bart notices that Ann recognizes the robber's voice. The robber on the ground takes Bart's wallet and realizes that he doesn't have much money. Bart claims that he mailed his money ahead, but the robber doesn't believe him and tells him to "remember" what he did with his money.
Ann speaks up and tells Bart that it's just money, but Bart refuses to yield, figuring the robbers don't want to perform murder. The woman says that the money is in the coach, and the robber gets it and then pistol-whips Bart. Once the robbers leave, the coach goes on its way. Bart figures that Ann and the robber know each other, and Ann insists that she did Bart a favor. Bart finally apologizes, and figures the robber will follow Ann, and wants his $1,500 back.
The coach arrives in Claver, and Dr. Fred Dillon greets the two women as Laura's father. Bart comes up with the women's luggage, and Fred invites him to dinner. As Fred and Ann leave, Bart tells Laura that he'll come over when he's settled in.
The sheriff questions the stagecoach driver about the robbery, and Bart offers to testify. The sheriff asks if he has any leads, and Bart asks to talk to the sheriff privately. The sheriff leads Bart to his office, and Bart is interested in the reward. He explains his motive, and makes it clear that he wants the reward. The sheriff suggests that he accuse him of obstructing justice, and Bart says that it's just a hunch. The finally says that there's a $500 reward for each robber, but demands the information. The sheriff refuses to split the reward with Bart, and Bart gives him a general description of the robbers, then says he'll be staying there for a while. The lawman gives Bart 24 hours to get a job or leave the town, or he'll jail him as a vagrant.
That night, Bart has dinner with the Dillons and Laura's boyfriend, Buck Wilkerson. Ann checks Buck on the size of his ranch. She hastily says that she wasn't thinking of her, but Laura. She insists that a woman would want to work with a husband, and talks about how lonely and hopeless her life is. Ann breaks into tears and leaves the table, and Laura goes after her.
Once the men are alone, Buck says that Ann is lonely. When Bart explains the sheriff's threat, Buck offers him a job as a ranch hand and Bart jokingly declines. The rancher suggests that Bart invites Ann to a social ball that the rancher is taking Laura too. Fred agrees, and Bart figures that it might be profitable. In return he asks Fred to hire him for $12 a month, and Fred agrees. Bart says that Fred has hired him to protect national security.
The next day, Bart follows Ann to the titles office. Bart goes into the office and has the teller cash break up his secret stash of money. All of the money is fresh rather than from the robbery, rather than Bart's $1500 from the robbery with a knife slit in it. As Bart leaves, he sees Ann leaves the titles office and follows her.
At the social ball, Bart has punch with Laura. He watches Ann dance with Buck, and Laura notices as well. The couple go outside hand-in-hand, and Fred comes over and takes some punch. The sheriff comes up and tells Bart that he needs to be out of town. Bart says that he's a "camel spotter", and Fred vouches for Bart. He chuckles until the sheriff glares at him.
Outside, Ann goes for a stroll with Buck. She asks when Buck and Laura are getting married, and he gives a vague answer and says Ann will make a beautiful bridesmaid. As they go in, Ann screeches and acts like something went down the back of her dress. Everyone runs out when they hear the screech, and Laura goes back in, jealous. Ann asks Buck to take her home, and he agrees.
Inside, Laura prepares to leave when Ann and Buck come in. Buck says that Ann has asked him to take her home, and Laura says that Bart will take her home. Surprised, Buck walks off and Laura suggests that she and Bart go looking for camels.
As they walk through the town, Laura tells Bart that she feels sorry for Laura because she has no one in her life. However, Laura refuses to let her cousin win. She asks Bart to take her in his arms and kiss her, and he obligingly does so. Laura thanks him and goes into her father's home, and says that she wanted to find out if she was a woman.
The next day, Laura finds Ann packing. She says that she's going to move to the hotel until she can catch a stage back east. Laura apologizes for jumping to conclusions, and Ann admits that she decided to keep Buck "in the family". When Laura asks Ann why she's leading Buck on, Ann says that she's tired "running around" and detests charity. She tells Laura that Buck is security, and figures she can "get him". Laura slaps her and orders Ann out of the house.
Buck comes in and Ann breaks into tears. She says that Laura has accused her of trying to steal Buck away, and asks Buck to help her with her luggage. Buck goes after Ann, and Laura breaks into tears.
Bart is playing poker at the local saloon, and they soon realize he's a professional gambler. He notices that one of the players, Link, has a bill with a slit in it. Link says that he's a barber and someone in his shop 20 miles away paid him with it. Bart cashes out, buys drinks for everyone, goes out, and buys a horse from a passing cowboy.
Bart rides to the neighboring town, Sand Rock, and gets a room at the hotel. He goes to the saloon, and one man notices him and turns away. Bart spots another man, Joe, playing poker. He invites himself into the game, and tells the players about the robbery. Bart calls Joe's bet and raises him $50 more. He says that Joe has a pocket full of bills, and Pete, the man at the bar notices.
Bart wins and cashes out, the puts a gun to Joe's head and tells Pete to give up his gun or he'll shoot. The gambler tells the other plays that Joe and Pete are the robbers he was talking about, and Joe tells Pete to toss away his gun. Once Pete does so, Bart tells Joe to put the bills in his pocket on the table. He has another player confirm that's a knife slit in the bills, and orders Joe to his feet.
On the way along, Joe points out that he only had $500 of Bart's $1500, and offers to show him where the other $1000 is in return for their freedom. Bart points out that he'll get $1000 reward for taking them in and After taking Joe and Pete back to Claver town, he hands them over to the sheriff. He asks about the $1000 rewards, and shows the sheriff his money with the knife hole.
Joe tells the sheriff that he won the other money in a poker game. The sheriff says that Joe has a point, and Bart tells him that Ann and Laura can identify the robbers' voices. Conceding the point, the sheriff says that he'll have the two women in, in the morning. He asks for Bart's money in the meantime as "evidence", and Bart has no chance but to hand it over.
The next day, Laura shows up but Ann doesn't. Bart is waiting, and Laura tells him that Ann married Buck two days ago. Bart says that he's had a hunch about Ann and Laura shouldn't give up on her yet.
Buck and Ann ride up in a carriage, and Buck says that they're on the way to inspect a new breed of cattle. They go into the sheriff's office, and Laura identifies the two men's voices, size, and hands. Ann contradicts Laura, and the sheriff has them speak through Ann's handkerchief to imitate how they spoke through masks during the robbery.
Laura figures they sound the same, but Ann doesn't. She and Buck leave, and outside Ann secretly checks a note that Joe slipped her. It says to get him out of jail or he'll start talking. Bart and Laura walk away, and down the street Laura goes on her way. Bart watches Ann, who asks Buck to go on alone while she visits Fred. Once Buck leaves, Ann goes to the saloon, and hides a gun in the food for the prisoners.
The sheriff comes in and gets the food, and Bart comes in. Ann points out that she's seen Bart everywhere she's been, and Bart claims the robbers took $2000 from him. He accuses Ann of refusing to cancel the robbers, just as Buck comes in. She leaves with her husband, and as they go their carriage Buck says that they're going to Fred's. Buck tells Ann that he's not going to treat Laura and Fred like enemies, and they're his friends so he's calling on them.
Later, Joe and Pete break out of jail. The sheriff calls for a posse, and Bart refuses to go with them. Buck joins the posse, and says that Ann went to the ranch. The posse follows the robbers to a cabin where they hid the money, and Pete rides off with the posse in hot pursuit.
Bart goes to the Wilkerson ranch and finds Ann there. She asks why he's there, and Bart says that Joe "mysteriously" got away. He suggests that wait for him to show up there, and points out that Joe and Ann are old friends. Ann denies it, and Bart tells her to turn off the lamp. When she doesn't do it, Bart goes over to the couch next to the lamp and finds Joe dead on the floor.
Ann claims that Joe tried to rape hr. Pete steps out and prepares to shoot Bart, and says that Bart isn't going to get the money. First he says that he's going to kill Ann, who was married to Joe. Ann ran out on Joe, and Bart shoes Anne out of the way, takes cover behind a support post, and shoots Pete dead.
The posse arrives, and Bart tells the sheriff that he killed Pete and Ann killed Joe. He also tells Buck that he's not married.
The next day, the sheriff pays Bart his money and his share of the reward. Ann is in jail, and Bart tells her that they'll never prove she's a bigamist and a murderess, but they'll never prove it. Instead she gets the other half of the reward for killing Joe. Bart says goodbye, and the sheriff tells Bart that Ann might not be getting out of jail. Bart leaves, and Fred and Laura wish him goodbye as he heads to the stagecoach. He kisses Laura and tells her that she's a woman, punches Buck when Buck offers to shake his hand, and tells Laura to give Buck another chance at marriage because he's dumb and unattractive... and those are the best type.
